French technology company iXBlue has been contracted by Saab to deliver its fibre-optic gyroscope technology, MARINS, for incorporation into the Swedish Navy‘s two Type A26 next-generation submarines.

Under the seven-year contract, iXBlue will provide its MARINS inertial navigation system to enable stealth autonomous navigation, providing very accurate heading, roll, pitch, speed and position, and enables operation under severe Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environments.

The system is incorporated with an array of features including high-accuracy sensors, fibre-optic gyroscope (FOG), strap-down technology, high baud rate and low latency, web based built-in interface, MIL-SPEC approved standard / IMO and is free of ITAR component versions available.

The FOG technology is instrumental in reduction of any radiated noise and requires low maintenance.

In June last year, Saab signed contracts worth Skr7.6bn ($919.01m) with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to deliver two new Type A26 submarines.

Claimed to be the world’s most modern submarine programme, the new A26 will be capable of operating in all oceans and across a broad spectrum of conflict environments.

The delivery of the new submarines is expected to commence in 2022 and will be completed in 2024.

Last year, iXBlue delivered seven MARINS units to equip the Swedish Navy’s in-service Gotland-class submarines.

The MARINS units have also been selected for the UK Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers (QEC) programme and Astute-class nuclear submarines as well as for the French Navy’s Cassard-class anti-aircraft vessels.
