Spanish electronics firm Indra has secured an order to supply German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) with new satellite communications systems for submarines.
Under the contract, Indra will deliver KU band systems based on a three-axis stabilised platform. The company has already completed the design of systems to be installed in the submarines.
Indra’s solution will offer fast and secure communications in addition to the increased data transmission capacity. It will also help reduce the time when antennas are exposed to radar detection by ships and aircraft.
With better coverage of communications and less operating costs, the terminals can be used for commercial and military communications satellites, the company stated.
The Spanish firm currently offers X and Ku band satellite communications systems, low-probability-of-intercept (LPI) radar systems and identification friend or foe (IFF) systems in order to support submarines worldwide.
The company also offers maintenance services for electronic, optical, and sonar systems.
In May this year, Indra received an order to deliver five satellite communications (satcom) terminals for the German Navy’s Braunschweig-class (K-130) corvettes.
Under this contract, the company is responsible for providing its satellite communications solution TNX-100 terminal for the navy.
As part of the three-year project, the company will also be responsible for manufacturing, integration and testing, electronic documentation, and training for crews.
