The US Navy's Dwight D Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) has resumed combat sorties from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, resuming its support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in Libya, Syria and Iraq against ISIS.

The Ike CSG has returned to the US 6th Fleet area of operations (AOO) in support of European allies, and regional and coalition partners as part of a routine deployment.

The aircraft carrier had earlier operated in the US 6th Fleet AOO, inflicting strikes from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea from 28 June to 7 July this year.

"As a flexible, adaptive force, we are committed to defeating Daesh, we are committed to our NATO allies and partners."

So far, Ike CSG has completed 116 sorties in support of OIR.

US 6th Fleet commander and vice-admiral Christopher W Grady said: “US 6th Fleet is fighting 'Daesh' (ISIS) on multiple fronts, simultaneously supporting three combatant commanders.

“As a flexible, adaptive force, we are committed to defeating Daesh, we are committed to our NATO allies and partners, and we are 'where it matters, when it matters.'”

US 6th Fleet is supporting three geographic combatant commanders, US Central Command, US Africa Command, and US European Command.

Ike CSG comprises aircraft carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61), and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26, with associated guided-missile destroyers USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), USS Mason (DDG 87), and USS Nitze (DDG 94).

OIR reflects the commitment of the US and regional partner nations in eliminating the terrorist group ISIS and the threat it poses to the international community.

In support of OIR, elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) continued conducting precision air strikes against ISIS targets in Sirte, Libya, from amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) as part of Operation Odyssey Lightning to support the Libyan Government of National Accord-aligned forces combating there.
