Curtiss-Wright has secured contracts worth more than $480m to deliver pumps, valves, generators, and propulsors for the US Navy’s Block IV Virginia-class submarine programme.
The Block IV contracts will cover supply for ten submarines, two per year from 2014 through 2018. A total of more than $330m funding has been allotted for these contracts, while the remaining funding will be delivered at a later date.
Curtiss-Wright Corporation chairman and CEO David C Adams said: "These submarines remain critically important to our national defence and our continuous improvement and cost reduction initiatives have supported the US Navy in its efforts to contain costs, while providing critical resources required by the navy.
"Since the inception of nuclear powered submarines, Curtiss-Wright’s commitment to providing critical and reliable technologies has ensured our continued participation in these indispensable programmes."
Work under these contracts will be performed by the Curtiss-Wright Electro-Mechanical Systems (EMS) division facilities in Cheswick and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, US.
In addition, the Curtiss-Wright Industrial Division facility in East Farmingdale, New York, US, will also support the project.
The firm has already started the engineering and manufacturing under the contract, which will continue through 2019.
The US Navy’s Virginia-class new attack submarine is an advanced stealth multi-mission nuclear-powered submarine for deep ocean anti-submarine warfare and littoral (shallow water) operations.
With a displacement of 7,800t, hull length of 377ft, and a diameter of 34ft, Virginia-class submarines can cruise at speeds of over 25k, while diving to more than 800ft deep.
Catering to the latest mission requirements, including anti-submarine, surface-ship warfare and special operations support, the ships can carry the Mark 48 advanced capability torpedoes, Tomahawk land-attack missiles, and unmanned underwater vehicles.
