BAE Systems has secured a contract from the US Navy to carry out phased maintenance for the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7).
Under the $26.8m contract, the company will be responsible for performing structural and tank repairs and preservation, repairs to ventilation and auxiliary systems, as well as temporary services, habitability upgrades, and ship alterations.
The contract includes options, which if exercised, will bring its total value to $32.6m.
BAE Systems Jacksonville and Mayport ship repair director David Thomas said: "We look forward to welcoming Iwo Jima back to Naval Station Mayport later this summer.
"Our men and women are eager to leverage their expertise and get to work on the ship in support of the navy and Marine Corps."
The phased maintenance availability is expected to commence on 31 August this year and conclude by 1 July 2016.
Commissioned in 2001, USS Iwo Jima is the final Wasp-class vessel of the US Navy.
The Wasp-class is the first specifically designed to employ air-cushion landing craft (LCACS) and to carry a squadron of Harrier II (AV-8B) short take-off vertical landing (STOVL) jets.
The LHD is capable of carrying a mix of assault helicopters, including six to eight Harriers for close air support. It includes 12 CH-46 Sea Knight, four CH-53E Sea Stallion, three UH-1N Huey, four AH-1W Super Cobra helicopters, and the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.
The vessels are also armed with two semi-active radar-guided Nato Sea Sparrow missile systems (NSSMS) for anti-air warfare protection, two rolling airframe missile (RAM) systems, and two Phalanx close-in weapon-system (CIWS).
