UTC Aerospace to deliver acoustic windows for US submarines

UTC Aerospace Systems has been awarded a five-year indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract from the US Naval Undersea Warfare Center to deliver high-frequency acoustic windows for the US Navy's four classes of submarine.

The window is an acoustically transparent housing that surrounds the sonar transducer array. It allows acoustic energy to pass through with minimal sound transmission interference and can be used for detection, navigation and ranging.

Since 2003, EPP has supplied 67 acoustic windows for all classes of US Navy submarines.

In March, UTC Aerospace Systems secured a $39m contract from the US Navy's Naval Surface Warfare Center to deliver sonar domes for surface combat ships.

Under this contract, UTC is responsible for shipping, installation and transportation fixtures, engineering and field services, inspection and repairs.

This latest contract covers deliveries through 2020 to the US Navy. The work will be performed by the Engineered Polymer Products (EPP) team, which is part of UTC Aerospace Systems' Aerostructures.
