The US Navy's Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) has a conducted task group exercise (TGEX) with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) off the coast of Southern California.

TGEX, a US-Canada multi-warfare exercise, is aimed at training units in various mission areas, including amphibious warfare, air defence, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, and maritime interdiction operations.

According to the US Navy, exercises like these support the US 3rd Fleet's (C3F) goal of strengthening the capability to respond to crises and also to protect the collective maritime interests of the country, its allies and its partners.

"TGEX involves us working with our coalition partners to learn how to work in a heavy operational environment."

Amphibious Squadron 1 operations officer lieutenant commander Christopher VanLoenen said: "(TGEX) consists of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and the 13th (Marine Expeditionary Unit), working with our coalition partners to learn how to work in a heavy operational environment.

"It gives us the chance to learn how to operate together."

The US assets in the exercise involved commander, expeditionary strike group (ESG) 3; commander, amphibious squadron (CPR) 1; amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4), amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18), and dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49).

The Royal Canadian units included Canadian Fleet Pacific, Halifax-class frigates HMCS Calgary (FFH 335) and HMCS Vancouver (FFH 331), and Victoria-class submarine HMCS Chicoutimi (SSK 879).

During the exercise, each naval ship participated in a series of drills that tested the Boxer ARG's and the RCN's capacity to respond to a number of scenarios such as general quarters, non-combatant evacuation operations, and search and seizure operations.

Recently, the US and Canada navies participated in exercises including Pacific Partnership and Trident Fury.
