SAIC receives $383m contract to manufacture MK 48 Mod 7 torpedo components

Science Applications International Corp (SAIC) has received a contract from US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) to manufacture components of MK 48 Mod 7 heavyweight torpedoes.

Science Applications International Corp (SAIC) has received a contract from US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) to manufacture components of MK 48 Mod 7 heavyweight torpedoes.

The contract has a base performance period of 27 months and includes options, which if exercised will increase the total value of the contract to more than $383m.

Under the contract, SAIC will produce afterbody / tailcone sections of the torpedoes for the US submarine fleet.

"SAIC will ensure that the Navy is ready to meet their missions at sea across the globe."

The contract options cover supply of spare parts, production material, engineering services, test equipment design and manufacturing, and hardware repair services.

Work under the contract will be carried out in the US, namely Bedford, Indiana; Marion, Massachusetts; Middletown, Rhode Island; and Indianapolis, Indiana, and is expected to be completed in January 2020.

SAIC senior vice-president and Navy and Marine Corps customer group general manager Tom Watson said: “SAIC is proud to grow our support to NAVSEA under this new contract award. As a technology and systems integrator, SAIC is very excited to expand our support to NAVSEA by providing critical weapons hardware to the navy.

“As the manufacturer of the MK 48 Mod 7 heavyweight torpedo afterbody/tailcone sections, SAIC will ensure that the Navy is ready to meet their missions at sea across the globe.”

In addition, Lockheed Martin has subcontracted SAIC for the procurement of various afterbody / tailcone assemblies, as well as provide engineering services.

Lockheed is currently manufacturing the guidance and control systems for the MK 48 Mod 7 torpedo.

The MK 48 Mod 7 torpedo has been designed as an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) weapon and is used by all classes of US Navy submarines.

Incorporated with broadband sonar enhancement, it can operate in deep as well as shallow waters and can be deployed against low-Doppler shallow submarines, fast deep diving submarines and high-performance surface vessels.
