Raytheon has received a multi-year contract worth $153m from the US Navy to manufacture 53 AN/APY-10 maritime, littoral and overland surveillance radars for its fleet of Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft.

Based on the previous AN/APS-137 radars, the new version offers accurate and actionable information for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, and for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

The new system features periscope detection mode, long-range detection and classification of maritime targets, and synthetic aperture for overland surveillance.

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems Business Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems vice-president Jerry Powlen said: "The AN/APY-10 is a product of nearly five decades of experience in developing and delivering innovative maritime and overland surveillance radars.

The AN/APY-10 radar is fully integrated into Boeing’s mission control and display system for control, display and data distribution on the aircraft.

The P-8A is a long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft designed to ensure maximum interoperability in the future battle space. This aircraft is also capable of conducting broad-area maritime and littoral operations.

In December 2014, Boeing delivered the eighth P-8A Poseidon, completing all planned deliveries to the US Navy for the year .The company is now under contract for 53 P-8As.
