BAE Systems has completed the anti-ship missile defence (ASMD) upgrade works on the Royal Australian Navy's last Anzac-class frigate, HMAS Stuart.
HMAS Stuart has been undocked at the company’s Henderson shipyard in Western Australia following the completion of the overhaul.
The modernisation of the Anzac frigate included the integration of an upgraded combat system and the Australian-designed CEAFAR active phased-array radar suite.
Platform modifications were also carried out on HMAS Stuart to enable the vessel to carry the Australian Navy’s MH-60R Seahawk submarine hunter helicopter.
Surface Forces commander commodore Christopher Smith said: “The entire Anzac class is now one of the most capable frigate forces in the world, and is tangible evidence of the navy’s progress towards deploying highly capable task groups.”
HMAS Stuart will now undergo several months of harbour acceptance trials to test the vessel's upgraded systems.
Anzac Programme Office director captain Rachel Durbin said: “We have undocked the final ship out of upgrade, and we expect to deliver on time to the navy in accordance with our original material acquisition agreement dates.
“Delivery of the upgrade has been a step change in capability to the fleet; a massive achievement, and one of which we all should be very proud.”
HMAS Stuart is expected to complete the entire modernisation process by late this year, which will signal the complete delivery of the project to the navy.
HMA Ships Perth, Arunta, Anzac, Warramunga, Ballarat, Parramatta, and Toowoomba have successfully received the ASMD upgrades and have been accepted into active service.
The ASMD programme is managed by the Anzac System Program Office's Warship Asset Management Agreement, and has been the result of collaboration between the Australian Department of Defence and industry figures, as well as an alliance involving the Commonwealth, BAE, NSM and Saab.
