The US Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) has commenced its planned increment availability (PIA) at Naval Air Station North Island in California.

PIA is a recurring part of a vessel’s lifecycle involving a wide range of renovation and repair works.

"As we now officially start PIA, not only are we starting the over 600 jobs, but the shipyard will also be adding 300 more contractors to the workforce."

The PIA is carried out on a ship in order to address the wear and tear sustained during prolonged, seven-month deployment periods.

USS Theodore Roosevelt commanding officer captain Carlos Sardiello said: “We are committed to being fully combat ready for our next deployment.

“Our plan is to ensure the ship is ready and our crew is fully trained, rested to support our navy, our joint force, and partners and allies around the world.”

More than 600 job opportunities are being supported by the maintenance operations and at least 150,000 man-hours of work are expected to be logged by the project team during the PIA.

USS Theodore Roosevelt chief engineer commander Randy Reid said: “As we now officially start PIA, not only are we starting the over 600 jobs, but the shipyard will also be adding 300 more contractors to the workforce.”

CVN 71 combat systems officer commander Eric Olsen noted that, in addition to the renovations and repairs of the basic ship systems, the carrier will also receive other upgrades such as the integration of a new tactical air radio, an improved air traffic control system and a new software delivery package.

The keel for the 1,092ft-long vessel was originally laid on 31 October 1981 and the vessel was subsequently commissioned with the US Navy on 25 October 1986.
