The US Navy’s San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS John P Murtha (LPD 26) has completed its mid-deployment voyage repair (MDVR) pier side in Doha, Qatar.

The MDVR was completed during a nine-day scheduled port visit. The ship’s crew, along with contractors, conducted maintenance and repair work during this period.

The repairs covered the ship’s plumbing and engineering. The personnel also replaced the self-serve laundry washers and dryers.

John P Murtha’s material and maintenance management coordinator Chief Logistics Specialist Seth Swanson said: “What we do out here is demanding and creates much wear and tear.

“Conducting an MDVR offers an opportunity to complete emergent repairs while deployed. Completing these repairs helps maintain our mission capabilities, reducing the possibility of equipment failures which could impact our mission.”

The MDRV also allowed the US Navy to boost its relationship with Qatar.

Swanson added: “We had a successful maintenance period and a demonstration of access not previously accomplished here in Qatar. By conducting the MDVR here in Qatar, it helps us to develop and build a relationship with the maintenance team which will, in turn, benefit future deploying units in the region.”

John P Murtha commanding officer captain Kevin Lane stated that this was the first MDVR for a US Navy vessel in Qatar.

LPD 26, which is part of the US Navy’s Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is on its maiden deployment.

The Boxer ARG/11th MEU team is deployed to the 5th Fleet area of operations to support naval operations to maintain security in the Central Region.
