The US Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) has successfully completed its four-day Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV).

A team of more than 200 INSURV inspectors carried out over 415 evaluations of the material and operational readiness of the nuclear-powered navy vessel as part of the initiative.

USS Abraham Lincoln passed INSURV with an 85% score, which is reportedly the highest grade to be achieved by an aircraft carrier on the East Coast of the US.

The inspection was carried out in five practice INSURV phases via the ‘crawl, walk and run’ process.

Sailors from CVN 72 gained knowledge regarding the items that required improving and upgrading during the practice phases, along with any discrepancies that needed correcting.

INSURV covered functional areas across all departments, including habitability, damage control equipment, navigation and engineering.

The team of inspectors assessed the carrier’s cleanliness and preservation, as well as every other aspect that would materially impact the vessel’s ability to be deployed for combat operations.

USS Abraham Lincoln is currently prepared to take on Carrier Strike Group 12 and achieve readiness for mission deployment following the successful completion of INSURV.

INSURV was established approximately 150 years ago and is the US Navy’s primary inspection entity.

The board comprises both service members and civilians who have undergone training and practice inspections and possess considerable fleet experience.

CVN 72 was launched in 1988 and subsequently commissioned with the US Navy in 1989.

The vessel was redelivered to the navy by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) in May last year after successfully completing its refuelling and complex overhaul (RCOH).
