The US Navy has chosen to exercise its contractual option to expand the testing, assessment, and demonstrations of Guardian DX, a robotic system of Sarcos Defense, for tasks that are particular to the navy.

These tasks would have a focus on the navy’s maintenance, modernisation, and sustainment aspects.

Claimed to be the defence option of the Guardian XT mobile robotic system, the Guardian DX robot is teleoperated.

Guardian XT is itself a type of Guardian XO, which is a complete-body, industrial exoskeleton run on battery.

As a dexterous robot, the Guardian DX robot with dual arm is designed to function with the same dexterity as humans, while ensuring the operators remain at a safe distance in difficult and dangerous conditions, such as at height.

Given its modular design, Guardian DX can be mounted to several types of mobile bases.

Sarcos Defense president Tom Jackson said: “Consistent with the Chief of Naval Operations’ readiness and modernization priorities announced earlier this year, we couldn’t be more proud to partner with the US Navy to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions to enhance our nation’s readiness at sea.

“The navy’s exercise of this contract option is an important step in our efforts to commercialize the Guardian DX consistent with the navy’s requirements.”

Last month, Sarcos Defense announced that its Guardian HLS Heavy-Lift System was purchased by several agencies.

Designed in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Guardian HLS system is a pneumatic heavy-lift system that can quickly lift objects with a weight of up to 45,000 pounds.

This easily packable lift system is useful for emergency response and asset recovery missions.

Based in Utah, the US, Sarcos Defense is a full-owned subsidiary of Sarcos Technology and Robotics Corporation, a provider of robotic systems.
