The US Navy has commissioned its newest San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, the USS Portland (LPD 27), during a ceremony at the Port of Portland, Marine Terminal 2 in Portland, Oregon.
LPD 27 is the third US Navy vessel to carry the name Portland and represents the second ship to honour Oregon’s largest city.

The ship was commissioned as the 11th San Antonio-class vessel during the ceremony.
USS Portland and its sister ships have been designed to carry out embarking, transporting and landing activities with capacities of more than 800 Marine personnel each.
The vessels are equipped with a flight deck that accommodates CH-53E Sea Stallion and MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, in addition to a well deck that is capable of launching and recovering landing craft and amphibious vehicles.
US Navy Secretary Richard V Spencer said: “USS Portland enters service in a period of dynamic security challenges, and I am confident this ship and crew will conquer these and future challenges because of the strength and talent of the sailors and Marines who will serve aboard this ship.

The US Navy’s San Antonio-class vessels are able to conduct a wide range of amphibious assault, special operations or expeditionary warfare missions.
Furthermore, the ships can either operate independently or function as part of amphibious-ready fleets, expeditionary strike groups or joint task forces.
The vessels have also carried out several anti-piracy operations, delivered humanitarian assistance and conducted foreign disaster relief operations worldwide.
USS Portland and its sister ships are 684ft-long and feature a displacement of approximately 24,900 long tonnes each.
The vessels are capable of travelling at speeds of more than 22k.
Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division originally delivered USS Portland to the US Navy in September last year following the signing of the DD 250 document, which officially transfers custody of the vessels from HII to the navy.
