US Navy officials have announced that a naval reservist in Maine was tested ‘presumptive positive’ for coronavirus (Covid-19).

This marks the first case of a US Navy reservist suspected to be infected by the Wuhan virus.

The individual was in quarantine at home in accordance with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention Guidelines.

The test result, which has been sent to the CDC for confirmation, is considered presumptive positive.

US Navy said in a statement: “Personnel that the individual immediately identified having close contact with have been notified and are in self-isolation at their residence.

“Commander, Navy Reserve Force is committed to taking every measure possible to protect the health of our force. We remain in close coordination with state and federal authorities, and public health authorities to ensure the well-being of our personnel and local population.”

A thorough investigation is being conducted by health professionals to determine whether any other personnel have been in close contact and possibly exposed.

Additional precautionary measures are planned to be taken depending on the investigation results.

CDC is monitoring Covid-19, which is caused by a novel coronavirus initially detected in Wuhan, Hubei province of China.

Chinese health officials have reported several illnesses with the virus in the country, which is spreading from person-to-person in many parts.

As of the end of 12 March, deaths from Covid-19 infection have crossed 4,700 across the world, with a total of more than 128,330 infections and 68,300 recoveries.
