The US State Department has approved the potential foreign military sale (FMS) of rolling airframe missile (RAM) Block 2 tactical missiles to Egypt.

Under the estimated $197m sale, Egypt has requested for up to 168 RIM-116C Rolling Airframe Missiles (RAM) Block 2 Tactical Missiles, and associated equipment.

Egypt has also sought for RAM Guided Missile Round Pack Tri-Pack shipping and storage containers, operator manuals as well as technical documentation.

Furthermore, the proposed sale includes US Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistical support services.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress about the possible sale.

DSCA said in a statement: “The proposed sale will support the Egyptian Navy’s Fast Missile Craft ships and provide significantly enhanced area defence capabilities over Egypt’s coastal areas and approaches to the Suez Canal.

“Egypt will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces since Egypt already operates previously procured RAM Block 1A missiles.”

Raytheon Missile Systems has been appointed as the prime contractor for the FMS programme.

Last September, the US State Department approved the sale of 51 RAM Block 2 tactical missiles to Japan.

RAM is an advanced self-defence weapon system designed to protect vessels of all sizes against anti-ship cruise missiles and asymmetric threats.

The guided missile system is a supersonic, lightweight, quick-reaction, ‘fire-and-forget’ weapon. It is an international cooperative programme between the US and Germany.

Its development, production and maintenance costs are shared between Raytheon and German company RAMSYS.

In June 2019, the US performed guided flight tests for the RAM Block 2A short-range, surface-to-air missile.
