The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a foreign military sale (FMS) of Aegis-class destroyer sustainment support and services to Japan.

Approved by the US State Department, the total estimated cost of the FMS and associated equipment is $134m.

Under the FMS, Japan has requested to buy follow-on technical support (FOTS) of Aegis-class destroyers, Aegis computer software updates, system integration and testing, in-country and on-site engineering support, and all other necessary services.

Japan has also sought system upgrades, on-job practical operations and maintenance, combat systems integration, installation of programme patches and adaptation data, and annual service agreements, among many others.

Furthermore, the proposed sale includes US Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistical support services.

The proposed FMS is expected to ensure Japan Maritime Self Defense Force’s (JMSDF) Aegis Destroyer fleet and the Japanese Computer Program Test Sites (JCPTS) continue to enhance the country’s defence capabilities.

DSCA stated: “There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.

“Implementation of this proposed sale will require the temporary assignment of five US Government and two contractor representatives to Japan.”

Separately, US State Department also approved the possible FMS of rolling airframe missile (RAM) Block 2 tactical missiles to Japan.

Under the estimated $61.5m sale, Japan has requested for up to 40 RIM-116C RAM Block 2 tactical missiles, RAM guided missile round pack tri-pack shipping and storage containers, operator manuals and associated equipment.

Raytheon Missiles and Defense has been appointed as the prime contractor for the FMS programme.

RAM is an advanced self-defence weapon system designed to protect vessels of all sizes against anti-ship cruise missiles and asymmetric threats.
