The US 3rd Fleet has successfully concluded Large-Scale Exercise (LSE) 2021, which spans multiple fleets.

The live, virtual and constructive globally integrated exercise, which lasted for 12 days, saw 3rd Fleet join multiple global fleets and contributing to nearly 36 live units underway ranging from aircraft carriers to submarines.

More than 50 virtual units and an unlimited array of constructive or computer-generated units also participated in the exercise.

US 3rd Fleet commander vice-admiral Steve Koehler said: “LSE 2021 has showcased the ability of our fleets to synchronise and integrate across the globe.

“It is clear to me that, in today’s dynamic maritime security environment, the US Navy brings precise, lethal and overwhelming force at the time and place of our choosing to achieve our objectives in the battle space.”

LSE 2021 has been designed to ‘refine synchronised maritime operations’ across multiple fleets in support of the joint force.

LSE 21 is part of the US Department of Defense’s (DoD) ‘Large Scale Global Exercise 21 (LSGE21)’.

LSGE21 started on 2 August and will run until 27 August. It is seeing participation of forces from the US Army, US Air Force (USAF), US Navy, and US Marine Corps (USMC), as well as the UK Army, Australian Defence Force (ADF), and Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF).

The US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) is executing LSGE21.

In March last year, the US Navy announced the postponement of the LSGE21 exercise until 2021 due to restrictions and other safety measures in place to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
