The UK Royal Navy’s Duke-class Type 23 frigate HMS Argyll has joined coalition forces in the Middle East to work together with the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) until late September.

As part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to maintaining security in the region, HMS Argyll will support both the Combined Taskforce 152 (CTF152) in the Arabian Gulf and the Combined Task Force 150 (CTF150) in the wider area of operations.

Under commanding officer Royal Navy commander Toby Shaughnessy, the Type 23 vessel will participate in counter-terrorism missions, including counter-narcotics operations to disrupt the funding of terrorist organisations. The vessel will also work to strengthen ties with regional partners and allies through port visits and exercises with the navies of other countries.

The navy ship also has the capacity to accommodate the Royal Navy’s new Wildcat HMA2 maritime attack helicopter.

Designed and trained for a wide range of maritime missions, HMS Argyll can carry a crew of 225 members, including a contingent of the Royal Marines.

Laid down on 20 March 1987, the guided missile frigate was launched on 8 April 1989 and commissioned into service with the navy on 31 May 1991.
