Germany-based thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has delivered the second next-generation SA’AR-6 class missile corvette ‘INS Oz’ to the Israeli Navy.

The naming and handover ceremony was carried out at Kiel in the presence of officials following all Covid-19 safety measures.

As the general contractor, TKMS is under contract to construct four SA’AR-6 class missile corvettes.

In May 2015, the contract for four SA’AR 6 corvettes was signed with TKMS as the lead and the German Naval Yards as the project partner.

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems CEO Dr Rolf Wirtz said: “As the first ship in the history of the Israeli Navy with this name, the ‘INS Oz’ will establish a new tradition.

“We are convinced of this here at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, because she has everything it takes. We are very proud that, after the first-of-class, this is now the second vessel to receive this honour.”

In February 2018, the construction phase commenced with the steel cutting ceremony of the first SA’AR 6-corvette after completion of the design phase.

The first ship was undocked 15 months after the first steel was cut.

In May 2019, the first SA’AR-6 class missile corvette was christened as INS Magen. It was handed over to the Israeli Navy in November last year.

TKMS noted that the Israeli Navy is equipping the missile corvettes with radar and weapon systems.

The SA’AR 6-corvettes have an overall length of 90m and a beam of approximately 13m. The displacement of each corvette is approximately 2,000t.

The remaining two corvettes of the series are scheduled for delivery this year.
