Singapore and the US have successfully concluded the annual bilateral military exercise Exercise Valiant Mark (XVM).

It was the 24th edition of the exercise and was held virtually between the US Marine Corps (USMC) and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) from 19 August to 3 September.

Nearly 100 personnel from 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade (7 SIB) and the USMC’s I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) participated.

It involved a series of subject matter expert (SME) exchanges in training, tactics, planning, and capability development fields.

The XVM exercise enabled the SAF and the USMC to enhance their bilateral ties and strengthen mutual understanding.

In a press statement, the Ministry of Defence, Singapore (MINDEF) noted that XVM 21 marked the 30th anniversary of SAF’s bilateral relationship with the US Marine Corps.

Exercise XVM was launched in 1991.

The two countries regularly participate in multiple bilateral and multilateral exercises, professional exchanges, and the cross-attendance of courses and seminars.

Separately, MINDEF also announced the completion of the annual Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) 2021 in the South China Sea.

The exercise, held between the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Indian Navy, concluded on 4 September.

SIMBEX, which was launched as a basic anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise in 1994, is the Indian Navy’s longest uninterrupted bilateral maritime exercise with any foreign navy.

RSS Steadfast commanding officer lieutenant colonel Carlin Song said: “The exercise gave us a valuable opportunity to hone our professional competencies and enhance our mutual understanding.

“That we were able to execute this smoothly without meeting face-to-face is testament to the good understanding that our navies have built up over the years.”
