The Royal Norwegian Navy (RNN) has awarded a new order to UK-based Cohort company Sea for the delivery of an upgraded virtual reality (VR) trainer system.

SEA is set to provide the navy with the modernised portable DECKsim system under the deal, which replicates the flight decks of ships and oil platforms, as well as land-based airfield environments for aircraft-handling training purposes.

"The new DECKsim VR trainer order follows the RNN’s use of SEA’s fully integrated flight deck officer (FDO) simulator, DECKsim, for a period of five years."

The new portable system is expected to enable the Norwegian Navy to train crew members on-board any ship or at any land-based facility.

The new DECKsim VR trainer order follows the RNN’s use of SEA’s fully integrated flight deck officer (FDO) simulator, DECKsim, for a period of five years at its naval training centre in Bergen.

SEA business development executive Andy McGowan said: “We have harnessed the latest developments in VR technology and embodied it within the modular DECKsim system.

“The result is a truly portable solution, which efficiently addresses FDO ‘currency’ training and testing, which is a challenge for all organisations.”

SEA’s DECKsim solution is currently deployed by several navies worldwide and can be easily configured for specific airframes, platforms and scenario requirements.

The company claims that the system’s current users have reduced FDO-related live aircraft flying hours by up to 50%, thereby providing a rapid return on investment.

The DECKsim system helps reduce training costs, while providing an environment where an individual can train in routine and emergency operating conditions.
