A newly expanded funding opportunity has been announced by the Department of the Navy (DoN) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programmes.

SBIR is focused on using federal research funds that will promote small businesses to propose new solutions that can be developed further to bring them to market.

STTR helps transition the products developed by the companies to the navy and Marine Corps.

Both of these programmes are located at the Office of Naval Research.

The Broad Agency Announcement (BAA), titled 20.1/20.A, is part of a broader effort by the SBIR/STTR programmes.

The US Department of the Navy (DoN) is looking at partnering with small businesses to help deliver advanced innovative technologies.

The scientific and research technology proposals being explored relate to sustaining and upgrading existing US defence platforms, including ships, ground vehicles and aircraft.

The new BAA will end on 12 February 2020 and offers approximately $250m in funding. It spans a range of 112 research topics, with the key focus on more availability of resources.

Navy SBIR/STTR director Bob Smith said: “The navy is seeking new tools, solutions and processes to address a variety of naval challenges.

“Through this BAA, we can identify groundbreaking technological advances, develop them further and integrate them to advance our war-fighting capabilities.”

SBIR/STTR, Accelerated Delivery and Acquisition of Prototype Technologies (ADAPT), Direct to Phase II and Navy-Air Force Joint Special Topic are the four main categories in the BAA 20.1/20.A.

In March last year, the US Navy was planning to conduct events to sign acquisition deals with small firms.
