Saab has won a low-rate initial production (LRIP) option from the US Navy for delivery of its AN/SPN-50(V)1 shipboard air traffic radar.

The LRIP phase two contract value stands at $37.1m. The company is responsible for production of the radar, delivery, test, and integration.

Saab US president and CEO Erik Smith said: “By leveraging Saab’s radar technology already in operational service with the US Navy, the Naval Air Traffic Management Systems Program Office and Saab is addressing shipboard air traffic control capability to ensure readiness and cost-efficiency.”

Saab noted that delivery of the US Navy’s advanced ATC and landing capability is overseen by the Naval Air Traffic Management Systems Program Office (PMA-213).

PMA-213, in partnership with Saab, is responsible for the radar system’s acquisition, deployment, and through life sustainment while in service within the American naval fleet.

Work under the contract will be carried out at its Syracuse, New York facilities. The first delivery is scheduled to take place next year.

The AN/SPN-50(V)1 radar system is one of the American versions of Saab’s Sea Giraffe Agile Multi Beam radar.

It functions as the primary air traffic control (ATC) surveillance radar for manned and unmanned aviation aboard the US Navy’s aircraft carriers and amphibious large deck platforms.

The SPN-50 system has been designed to support the deployment, sustainment and operation of aviation assets by providing aircraft position, radar signal, and weather data.

In September 2016, US Navy placed an order with Saab for the procurement of an AN/SPN-50 (V)1 radar systems.
