Saab has secured a contract from General Dynamics to supply the Sea Giraffe AMB naval radar for installation on the US Navy’s newest Littoral Combat Ships (LCS).

The company won the first order for the radar system for the LCS ships in 2005.

Saab has continuously carried out enhancements to the standard Giraffe AMB sensor to meet the requirements of a range of missions from open-ocean blue-water applications to the littorals.

Saab senior vice-president and Surveillance business area head Anders Carp said: “Saab is a world leader in radar and sensor technology. With the Sea Giraffe, we have developed a highly capable and efficient radar platform that can be easily adapted and evolved to meet the specific operational needs of the customer; now and in the future.”

The AN/SPS-77 is currently being deployed on the US Navy’s Independence-class LCS vessels.

In addition, Saab is development variants of Sea Giraffe for installation on US Navy Expeditionary Sea Base ships and US Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutter-class vessels.

Also under development is a derivative of the AN/SPS-77 to meet the air traffic control needs of the US Naval Air Systems Command.

Known as AN/SPN-50, the radar will be deployed on CVN-class aircraft carriers and LHA/LHD-class landing dock ships.

In February this year, the US Navy named LCS 36 as USS Kingsville in honour of the city of Kingsville, Texas.

Austal received the contract in December last year to build LCS 36 and LCS 38.
