Saab has introduced its new RBS15 Gungnir next-generation anti-ship missile system at the Farnborough International Airshow 2018 in the UK.

The company has developed the RBS15 range of missiles for deployment in littoral operations in the Baltic Sea and other demanding environments.

RBS15 Gungnir is capable of engaging targets from the air, land and sea.

It is also able to conduct coordinated attacks with multiple missiles against a wide range of naval and land-based targets.

"RBS15 Gungnir is offered in both air-launched and surface-launched configurations that offer greatly improved capabilities compared to other missile systems on the market."

Saab Dynamics Business Area senior vice-president and head Görgen Johansson said: “RBS15 Gungnir is offered in both air-launched and surface-launched configurations that offer greatly improved capabilities compared to other missile systems on the market.

“With an improved range to more than 300km and highly advanced target seeker, it gives the capability to engage any target in all conditions.”

Saab was initially awarded the contract for the development and production of the next-generation RBS15 Gungnir anti-ship missile system in March last year.

The Skr3.2bn ($362.91m) contract was awarded by the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) and deliveries are currently slated to be carried out between 2017 and 2026.

FMV later awarded a further contract for additional production of the new RBS15 missiles for Skr500m ($56.70m) in April last year.

Delivery of the additional missiles is anticipated to commence in the mid-2020s.

The RBS15 missile family has been jointly manufactured by Saab and Diehl Defence.

It is currently in service with a number of navies, coastal batteries and airforces from Sweden, Finland, Germany, Poland, Croatia and Thailand, along with an additional undisclosed country.

RBS15 Gungnir is the weapon’s system-level name, while the missile’s air-launched configuration is known as the RBS15 Mk4 Air system.
