The British Royal Navy’s Trafalgar-class attack submarine, HMS Talent, has arrived at HM Naval Base Clyde from its former home in Plymouth.

HMS Talent, which operated from HM Naval Base Devonport for nearly three decades, will now operate from its new home at HM Naval Base Clyde.

The vessel completed a refit at Devonport in June last year.

Clyde is being developed as the Royal Navy’s Submarine Centre of Specialisation. It will serve as the base for all 11 Royal Navy submarines by next year.

The four Dreadnought-class nuclear deterrent submarines are expected to start arriving at Faslane from the early 2030s.

Royal Navy Submarine Service head rear admiral John Weale said: “It is great to have even more submariners permanently based in Faslane as we work towards becoming the home of all Royal Navy submarines.

“The Clyde Community warmly welcomes the men of HMS Talent as they settle into their new life on the Loch.”

The number of employees at the naval base is expected to increase to around 8,200 by 2022.

Clyde is home to the UK’s strategic nuclear deterrent, mine counter-measures vessels, and patrol boats.

The submarines at the base include Astute-class submarines HMS Astute, HMS Ambush, and HMS Artful, as well as Vanguard-class boats HMS Vanguard, HMS Victorious, HMS Vigilant, and HMS Vengeance as part of the Faslane Flotilla.

The 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines, the First Mine Countermeasures Squadron, Flag Officer Sea Training North, and Northern Diving Group are also based at Clyde.

The government is investing £1.3bn to make Clyde Britain’s submarine hub.
