The Royal Australian Navy has opened a new support tower facility at the Henderson Shipyard in Western Australia to increase productivity.

The new five-storey facility is expected to reduce costs for Royal Australian Navy ships undergoing maintenance and modifications.

It consists of gangway points in the upper levels to provide direct access to ships in dry-dock or docking cradles either side of the tower.

The tower was designed by architect Brown Falconer and built by Perth-based commercial construction company Badge Constructions.

Australia Defence Industry Minister Steven Ciobo stated that the opening of the facility is part of the improvement efforts of the Warship Asset Management Agreement (WAMA) Alliance that comprises the Commonwealth, BAE Systems Australia, Saab Systems and Naval Ship Management.

Ciobo said: “These enterprises are providing through-life support to the government’s previously announced continuous naval shipbuilding programme.

Additionally, the tower houses offices and administration spaces for personnel working on the ships.

The tower will support the Anzac Class Midlife Capability Assurance Program (AMCAP), which is designed to rectify obsolescence issues and modernise critical ship systems.

In November last year, HMAS Arunta became the first Anzac-class frigate to receive a full AMCAP upgrade.

The AMCAP programme is expected to involve around 2.4 million hours of work to upgrade the fleet of eight ships.

The partners will continue the programme work through until 2023.
