Geomagnetic sensors provider PNI Sensor has secured a contract to provide high-performance magnetometers for the US Navy.

The contract requires PNI Sensor to develop and offer magnetometers for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), which is headquartered in Newport, Rhode Island.

The NUWC, which is one of the corporate laboratories of the Naval Sea Systems Command, offers research, development, test and evaluation services for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, and offensive and defensive weapons systems associated with undersea warfare.

PNI’s magnetometers will be be used in the US Navy’s towed-arrays to offer high sensitivity and better signal-to-noise performance.

PNI said the magnetometers are based on its magneto-inductive sensor technology which offers high resolution, low power consumption, no hysteresis, large dynamic range, and high sampling rates.

NUWC has two major subordinate activities of Division Newport and Division Keyport in Keyport, Washington. It also controls the Gould Island and Fox Island facilities.

The centre employs over 4,400 civilian and military personnel and has a budget of more than $1bn.
