Northrop Grumman has announced that Harris Corporation and Comtech PST will join the US Navy’s Next Generation Jammer-Low Band (NJG-LB) team.

The team will support Northrop in the demonstration of existing technologies (DET) for the NJG-LB programme.

On 25 October, the US Navy awarded Northrop Grumman a $35.1m, 20-month contract for DET for the low-band frequency jammer, the second increment of the NJG-LB programme.

The company has been the US Navy’s airborne electronic attack integrator for the EA-18G Growler electronic warfare (EW) system for more than 50 years.

Northrop Grumman surveillance and electromagnetic manoeuvre warfare vice-president Paul Kalafos said: “The Northrop Grumman team brings extensive electronic warfare expertise and a long history of building and deploying systems that support the challenging carrier-based aviation environment. We are proud to be working with Comtech and Harris to help the navy maintain its warfighting edge.”

“Our work on NGJ-LB also advances the company’s strategy to extend into new EW markets through pods and unmanned systems.”

Under the programme, Harris will supply its electronic attack equipment for integration within Northrop Grumman’s NGJ-LB pod system. Comtech PST will provide its high-power radio frequency (RF) amplifier systems.

Harris Electronic Systems president Ed Zoiss said: “Harris is a leader in EW solutions worldwide and has extensive experience with the EA-18G Growler. Our significant investments in open architecture systems are ready-made for the US Navy NGJ-LB DET.

“Our work on NGJ-LB also advances the company’s strategy to extend into new EW markets through pods and unmanned systems.”

Comtech PST president Michael Hrybenko added: “Our long-standing relationship and position as a premier provider of high-power RF systems positions the team well to support the Next Generation Jammer programme for years to come.”

The NGJ system is an advanced electronic attack technology that combines beam-jamming techniques with electronics.

It is designed to replace the ALQ-99 tactical jammer system to provide advanced airborne electronic attack capabilities for the EA-18G Growler aircraft.
