Rolls-Royce has entered an agreement with Indian shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) to assemble MTU Series 4000 engines for naval vessels in India.

The 12V and 16V 4000 M90 type engines are equipped with a rated power of 2,040kW and 2,720kW respectively, and will undergo final assembling at GRSE’s Diesel Engine Plant in Ranchi, India.

GRSE chairman and managing director rear admiral (retired) V K Saxena said: “This agreement strengthens our long-standing and successful partnership with MTU.

“It is an important contribution to our indigenisation programme in line with the government’s Make in India strategy.

"We plan to take forward the partnership between GRSE and MTU and achieve 40% indigenous content progressively for MTU 4000 series engines.”

The agreement between the two companies also includes plans for the transfer of MTU technology related to assembly, testing and painting, in addition to an option for the local production of parts in the future.

GRSE has been assembling Series 4000 engines for naval vessels in India since 2004 using components and parts sourced from MTU.

The company has been involved in the assembly of MTU Series 538 and 396 engines for more than three decades under licence agreements with MTU.
