Huntington Ingalls Industries‘ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division has secured a new $59.7m contract to plan and carry out the upgrade of the US Navy’s Los Angeles-class submarine, USS Boise (SSN 764).

The new deal was awarded by the US Navy and includes several options, which if exercised would bring the total value of the contract to $385m.

HII will be responsible for planning the entirety of the maintenance, repair, alteration, testing and routine work during the vessel’s scheduled fiscal year 2018 (FY18) engineered overhaul as part of the arrangement.

Newport News Shipbuilding Virginia-class submarine programme and fleet services vice-president Matt Needy said: “We are proud to do our part in helping reduce the navy’s submarine fleet maintenance backlog, which enables them to increase the total number of attack submarines operationally ready for deployment.

“Our shipbuilders understand how important it is to the navy and to our nation that these submarines are returned back into service on schedule and on budget.”

The Los Angeles class, also known as the 688 class, was preceded by the Sturgeon class and followed by the Seawolf-class vessels.

Newport News originally laid the keel on USS Boise in August 1988 and the vessel was subsequently delivered to the US Navy in September 1992.

A total of 62 submarines Los Angeles-class have been completed to date, including 41 that remain in active service today.
