Cohort's subsidiary SEA is set to start upgrading the combat systems highway (CSH) infrastructure on-board the Chilean Navy’s three frigates.

The Chilean warships, Almirante Cochrane, Almirante Condell and Almirante Lynch, were formerly Type 23 frigates of the UK Royal Navy (RN).

Slated to start this month, the upgrade activity is part of major revamp work that will be done on the Chilean Navy ships’ air warfare systems.

"We will deliver into the Chilean ships the same high-quality upgrade that has been fitted on the RN frigates."

Designed to manage data exchange messages, CSH enables reliable and deterministic communication between operational assets such as the combat management system, surveillance, and weapon and sonar systems.

SEA Maritime business development executive Paul Parsons said: “We will deliver into the Chilean ships the same high-quality upgrade that has been fitted on the RN frigates, paving the way for the forthcoming upgrade of the air warfare systems on the Chilean vessels.

“The programme will be carried out whilst the frigates are alongside in Valparaiso Naval Base and we will be working closely with the Chilean Navy to ensure this programme is completed early next year.”

SEA will introduce new open architecture system interfaces using standard Ethernet format along with a new combat system performance monitoring capability.

The new architecture will be hosted on user-friendly touchscreen technology and will offer clear graphical visualisation of the combat system data exchange activity.

The upgrade of the CSH will also see the introduction of a new remote display capability to enable distribution of the information to new locations on-board.

Additionally, a new data logging capability will enhance the offline system performance analysis on-board the frigates.

SEA will perform upgrades on the first Chilean frigate and on the second ship work will be carried out alongside Chilean navy personnel, while the third vessel fit will be managed by the Chileans.

The company has recently carried out similar obsolescence upgrade on the RN’s 13 Type 23 ships and is under a support contract for CSH upgrade work on RN’s frigates and other defence forces.
