BAE Systems has officially named its new floating dry dock at its San Diego shipyard in the US, as part of a wider effort to enhance its naval ship repair capabilities.

The new 950ft-long, 205ft-wide facility is the largest floating dry dock in California, and has a design lifting capacity of 55,000t.

The dock is to be paired with another dry dock at the shipyard, and will be primarily used to maintain the growing fleet of the US Navy in San Diego.

BAE Systems' new facility will play a vital role in keeping the navy vessels, as well as sailors in their homeport for maintenance and repairs.

US Navy’s San Diego-based amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) is scheduled to be the first vessel to be provided maintenance and upgrade services in the new dock later this month.

The shipyard is located at 2205 East Belt at the foot of Sampson Street in San Diego, near Barrio Logan, California.

BAE Systems confirmed an investment of nearly $100m in order to acquire a new dry dock in 2015, as well as offer several infrastructural upgrades at the San Diego shipyard.

The dry dock will employ several environmental design features, including LED lighting, electric cranes, air-cooled emergency generators, a zero discharge closed-loop salt water system and storm water recovery systems.
