BAE Systems has successfully completed three years of sea-based trials of its Artisan medium-range 3D air and surface surveillance radar on the UK Royal Navy’s Type 23 Duke-class frigates.

Since 2013, the radar has successfully demonstrated its capability across different types of Royal Navy frigates.

It has been designed to simultaneously monitor more than 800 objects between 200m and 200,000m away, as well as cut through radio interference equal to 10,000 mobile phone signals.

“Artisan 3D is a groundbreaking radar system that delivers real capability to the Royal Navy with its supreme accuracy and uncompromising tracking."

BAE Systems products and training services director Les Gregory said: “Artisan 3D is a groundbreaking radar system that delivers real capability to the Royal Navy with its supreme accuracy and uncompromising tracking.

“Its world-leading electronic protection measure ensures that even complex jammers will not reduce its effectiveness.

“Artisan 3D has now been extensively tested, demonstrating high-performance with significant flexibility to meet current and future threats. It provides air and surface surveillance and target tracking to support platform and weapon system requirements on a wide range of platforms.”

Under a £105m contract, the company will develop, build and deliver support for 19 of the Artisan 3D radars for the Royal Navy until 2022.

All 19 radars will be delivered to the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) by the middle of this year.

Along with the 11 frigates fitted to date, the radar has also been installed on the new HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, a landing platform helicopter assault ship, and a landing platform dock assault ship.

It has also been deployed at MOD’s land-based test site at Portsdown Technology Park, Portsmouth, UK.

Artisan 3D will also be incorporated on HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier, two additional frigates and a landing platform dock assault ship.
