The US Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has awarded a $65m follow-on contract option for the continued maintenance of the MK48 submarine-launched heavyweight torpedoes.

The five-year deal will see Lockheed Martin continue to support the navy’s intermediate-level maintenance activities for the torpedoes at the Pearl Harbor Heavyweight Torpedo Intermediate Maintenance Activity (IMA) in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.

Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems MK48 Torpedo IMA Programme programme manager Richard Dunn said: “Lockheed Martin is appreciative and proud of our more than decade-long relationship with the US Navy in support of the MK48 torpedoes.

"Our teams have established a strong partnership that ensures availability and reliability of the MK48 heavyweight torpedoes, while reducing total programme lifecycle costs."

The company currently supplies infrastructure support for the navy’s intermediate maintenance activities, including quality assurance, training, audit support, pier-side services and ordnance handling.

The US Navy provides the facilities, all required parts and equipment, and the procedures required to conduct the maintenance tasks under the arrangement.

Lockheed Martin carries out modernisation works on the heavyweight submarine-launched torpedoes in order to ensure that a sufficient number of ready-for-issue weapons are available to the US Navy’s Fleet Commanders.

In addition, the company conducts intermediate-level maintenance for both the exercise and wartime-ready ‘warshot’ configurations of the MK48 torpedoes.

The original contract was awarded to Lockheed Martin in March and the company has delivered specialised maintenance services for the MK48 torpedoes since 2007.

The MK48 heavyweight torpedo is capable of being carried by all US Navy submarines and has been designed to combat fast, deep-diving nuclear submarines, as well as high-performance surface vessels.
