Naval Group has accepted an additional two CAMCOPTER S-100 unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for operational use with the French Navy.

This brings the total count of Schiebel’s unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) in use with the French Navy to four.

The two additional UAVs passed acceptance tests in October in the presence of the Naval Group and French Navy representatives.

The four UAVs will be deployed on the Mistral-class amphibious helicopter carriers Tonnerre and Mistral.

The CAMCOPTER S-100 has already been integrated on the French Navy’s Mistral-class vessel Dixmude.

According to Schiebel, connecting the rotary wing UAS to the combat system of an amphibious helicopter carrier is a first in Europe.

This integration will enhance the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities of the helicopter carrier.

The newly acquired CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS will be integrated on the Mistral-class amphibious helicopter carriers in the future months.

French Navy UAS programme officer LCDR Serge D said: “The S-100 on Mistral-class will be the first operational tactical UAS for the French Navy and this is a major step towards the Mercator plan.”

Schiebel noted that the CAMCOPTER S-100 vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAS operates day and night and can carry multiple payloads weighing up to 50kg.

In November last year, Schiebel received a contract from the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) to supply its Camcopter S-100 VTOL UAS.
