MAN Energy Solutions has been selected to supply engines for the four logistic support ships (LSS) being built for the French Navy.

The company will deliver a total of 16 engines for the four refuelling tankers.

In February this year, the Organization for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR) awarded a €1.7bn contract to a consortium of Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Naval Group to build the LSS vessels under a Franco-Italian programme.

OCCAR awarded the contract on behalf of the French defence procurement agency DGA and Italy’s NAVARM.

MAN Energy Solutions chief sales officer and executive board member Wayne Jones said: “This is a real stamp of approval for our company as this is a sizable contract with what is probably one of the most active navies in Europe.

The 194m-long ships will have a diesel-electric propulsion system and a fuel capacity of 13,000m³.

MAN will supply two MAN 12V32/44CR engines and two MAN 8L32/44CR engines under the contract.

The four ships are expected to be delivered between 2022 and 2029. They will be used to provide logistical support to combat vessels of French and allied navies.

Support will include transporting fuel, weapons and ammunition, spare parts, and food supplies.

The LSS vessels will deliver support to the aviation group attached to the French Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
