Lockheed Martin has received a multi-year production (MYP) contract of 24 additional APY-9 radars, which are to be integrated into the US Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft.
Valued at more than $600m, the contract was secured by the company’s Radar Sensor Systems market segment from Northrop Grumman, the manufacturer of the E-2D aircraft.

The new contract comes as the current five-year production contract for the APY-9 radar programme, in support of the E-2D aircraft project, is set to expire next year.
It includes five additional years of production between 2021 and 2025.
Under the new MYP, Lockheed Martin will offer its new Advanced Radar Processor.
Lockheed Martin Airborne and National Surveillance Radar programme director Ken Kaminski said: “We’re excited to have the opportunity to continue producing APY-9 radars for the navy’s use on its Advanced Hawkeye aircraft and to continue supporting our customers with performance upgrades on a regular basis.”

By GlobalDataThe APY-9 radar is designed to provide greater airborne command and control, as well as expanded surveillance for the E-2D aircraft.
The mechanical and electronic scanning capabilities delivered by the radar system enable the users to identify smaller targets at a greater range.
The all-weather, airborne early warning radar can detect targets in the dense littoral and overland environments.
Kaminski added: “The team has performed extremely well to date in terms of delivering all of our APY-9 systems on or ahead of schedule.”
Lockheed Martin produces the radars under the contract at its facilities in Syracuse and Owego, New York; and Clearwater, Florida.
In April, Northrop Grumman won a $3.2bn multi-year contract modification from the US Navy to deliver an additional 24 E-2D aircraft.
