L3Harris Technologies has secured a contract to install the second and third increments of the Undersea Warfare Training Range (USWTR) for the US Navy.

The $393m award follows roughly ten years of execution by L3Harris on the first increment.

This project forms part of a $127m initial contract awarded by the US Navy to L-3 Communications company in 2012.

Under the first USWTR Increment, L3Harris installed the ocean sensor and shore electronics subsystems instrumenting an area covering nearly 500nm² near Jacksonville, Florida, US.

The company will modernise and replace systems at three Undersea Warfare Training Range sites near southern California, the Bahamas and Hawaii under second and third Increments.

L3Harris CEO Christopher E Kubasik said: “I’m proud of our team for delivering Increment 1 two years early so we could accelerate this award to support the sailors and provide them with early access to the best undersea range technology available to maintain operational readiness.

“For six decades in partnership with both our US and international Navy customers, L3Harris has successfully developed, manufactured, installed and supported undersea training range technology.

“Our capabilities ensure that sailors train in an environment that is as close to their mission environment as possible, giving them a competitive advantage.”

Ships, underwater vessels and aircraft undergo anti-submarine warfare training at USWTRs.

Each USWTR range includes shore-based control facilities and more than 600 miles of advanced acoustic sensors and undersea cables.

The range also includes display and processing facilities.

In December last year, L3Harris secured a $496m Next Generation Jammer Low Band (NGJ-LB) engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) contract from the US Navy.
