A keel-laying ceremony for the US Navy’s future Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Harvey C Barnum (DDG 124) was held at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (BIW) shipyard in Maine.

The ceremony, which was held on 6 April, was attended by DDG 51 class programme manager captain Seth Miller, the ship’s namesake colonel Harvey ‘Barney’ Barnum, as well as sponsor Martha Hill.

DDG 124 is a Flight IIA destroyer. It is equipped with Aegis Baseline 9, which includes an integrated air and missile defence capability.

The destroyer will feature an increased computing power and radar upgrades that will improve detection range as well as reaction time against modern air warfare threats.

Miller said: “Col Barnum has spent his life in service to our country and it is an honour to lay the keel of his ship.

“This ship and all who serve aboard it will be a reminder of the honour, courage, and commitment that Col Barnum embodies.”

According to a press statement released by US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), PEO Ships will have the responsibility for executing the development and procurement of all destroyers, amphibious ships, as well as special mission and support ships.

PEO Ships is one of the US DoD’s largest acquisition organisations.

In January last year, keel was laid for USS John Basilone (DDG 122) at General Dynamics Bath BIW shipyard in Maine.
