The Italian Navy’s Alpino-class frégate européenne multi-mission (FREMM) frigate ITS Alpino has been pitched for the US Navy’s FFG(X) future frigate programme.

ITS Alpino’s design is currently being considered by the US Navy for use in the vessel development project.

The 144m-long ITS Alpino has a full-load displacement of approximately 6,700t and is capable of sailing at a maximum speed of 27k.

It is able to accommodate two helicopters and up to 200 crew members.

The Italian Navy frigate features 16 Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells that can be upgraded to a total of 32 units.

The VLS cells have been designed to fight against undersea, surface and airborne threats.

Fincantieri Marine Group senior vice-president Charles Goddard said: “The FREMM’s design will enable it to grow over its service life with the US Navy with limited upgrade costs.

“This ship is a technical marvel.”

Should the US Navy approve the construction of new ITS Alpino-concept vessels under the FFG(X) programme, the project is expected to generate thousands of high-tech manufacturing jobs within the country.

The Italian Navy vessel is currently on a visit to Baltimore, New York, Boston and Norfolk in the US, which is expected to help improve cooperation between the navies of the two nations.
