The maiden India-UK tri-services joint exercise, Konkan Shakti 2021, has commenced.

The exercise is aimed at bolstering the continuing co-operation between the two countries.

Held in two phases, the seven-day exercise will run from 21-27 October.

The maritime part of the exercise involves the harbour phase, which is being held in Mumbai until 23 October, and the sea phase, which will be conducted from 24 October.

The land phase of the exercise is being conducted between the Indian Army and British Army at Chaubatia in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

The exercise at sea will include activities such as over-the-horizon targeting drills, advanced warfare tactics, and ASW exercises.

Aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, alongside its integral F-35 fighter aircraft and helicopters, the Type 23 ship HMS Richmond, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Fort Victoria, and a Royal Netherland Navy Frigate HNLMS Evertsen, are representing the British Navy in the exercise.

The Royal Navy will also be represented by Type 45 Daring Class air-defence destroyer HMS Defender.

The Indian Navy will be represented by stealth guided missile destroyers INS Kolkata, INS Chennai and INS Kochi, stealth frigates INS Talwar and INS Teg, and INS Aditya.

Integral Sea King 42-B, MIG 29-K fighter aircraft, Dornier and P-8I maritime patrol aircraft (MPA), Kamov-31 and Chetak helicopters, and a submarine will also represent the Indian Navy in the exercise.

Indian Air Force aircraft SU-30 MKI fighters, AWACS, AEW&C and a flight refueling aircraft will also take part in the exercise.
