Huntington Ingalls Industries‘ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division has commenced the scheduled upgrade work on the US Navy’s Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered submarine USS Boise (SSN 764).

The company is set to carry out an extended engineering overhaul on the vessel following its arrival at the Newport News shipyard, which is slated to continue for 25 months.

The modernisation project will see a number of upgrade works be carried out on the existing systems on-board the vessel.

"Submarine fleet support work represents a significant increase in our workload and provides a critical balance for public and private shipyards."

It is currently expected to be completed in 2021.

The initiative will see the US Navy submarine undergo planned pierside maintenance and repair works before being transported to a dry dock in January next year.

HII Newport News Shipbuilding Fleet Support Programmes vice-president Bill Smith said: “Submarine fleet support work represents a significant increase in our workload and provides a critical balance for public and private shipyards.

“We have been preparing for Boise’s availability and looking forward to returning the submarine back to the fleet.”

Newport News initially received a $59.7m contract from the US Navy for the overhaul of USS Boise in October last year.

The agreement includes several options that, if exercised, would take the total value of the deal to $385m.

SSN 764 is the 14th Los Angeles-class attack submarine and represents the second US Navy platform to be named in honour of Boise, the capital of US state of Idaho.

The Keel on the submarine was originally laid by Newport News Shipbuilding in August 1988 and the vessel was subsequently delivered to the navy in September 1992.

USS Boise was commissioned with the US Navy during a ceremony at Virginia on 7 November 1992.
