Hensoldt UK has supplied an advanced bridge system for the Royal New Zealand Navy’s (RNZN) Polar-class logistic ship HMNZS Aotearoa.

The fully integrated naval bridge system (INBS) features a dual redundant data distribution system.

It is completely incorporated with Kelvin Hughes multifunction displays and is certified to Lloyd’s Register’s INS code.

Leveraging the advanced solid-state Kelvin Hughes SharpEye Doppler radars, the radar system provides situational awareness during all weather conditions.

According to Hensoldt UK, any designated multifunction displays can be used to operate all networked functions, such as the radar, the Warship Electronic Chart Display and Information System (WECDIS), and the Bridge Alert Management System (BAMS).

Located in the carbon composite turning unit, the SharpEye transceivers provide an ease of installation and high reliability.

In order to lower maintenance, a direct drive motor system is used in place of the traditional antenna rotator gearbox.

Hensoldt UK Naval and Surveillance head Tony Taylor said: “HMNZS Aotearoa has one of the most complex bridge systems delivered by Hensoldt UK to date.

“We are pleased to see the HMNZS Aotearoa arriving in NZ and look forward to working with the crews for years to come.”

Delivered by Hyundai Heavy Industries, the 26,000t is the largest ever vessel built for the RNZN.

In August last year, Hensoldt received a €40m contract from Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik (STM) to upgrade vision equipment used by the Turkish Navy’s Preveze-class submarines.

Under this contract, Hensoldt was to provide a total of eight SERO 400 periscopes.
