German firm Hensoldt has received a contract from the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) to supply the latest version of its TRS-3D naval radar and MSSR 2000 I IFF system to the Norwegian Coast Guard.

The radars will be integrated into the Norwegian Coast Guard’s new P6615 project Arctic coast guard vessels.

Currently, the TRS-3D and IFF Systems are in use onboard the three ‘Nordkapp’ offshore patrol vessels (OPV).

Hensoldt will decommission and upgrade the systems before re-installing them on the Arctic coast guard vessels.

The €20m contract also includes an option for upgrading the TRS-3D and IFF systems of the ‘Svalbard’ vessel, an icebreaker and OPV operated by the Norwegian Coast Guard.

According to the contract, the company is required to deliver three TRS-3D radars, including the latest solid-state technology and signal processing software.

The delivery is expected to commence from 2021, in parallel to the building programme of the new vessels.

“I am proud that our TRS-3D naval radar has proven itself with the Norwegian Coast Guard so that the customer considered its upgraded version as superior to other products.”

The TRS-3D, which is a three-dimensional multimode naval radar for air and sea surveillance, features a secondary radar MSSR 2000 I for identification-friend-or-foe (IFF) and is capable of operating all existing IFF modes.

Hensoldt CEO Thomas Müller said: “I am proud that our TRS-3D naval radar has proven itself in service with the Norwegian Coast Guard so that the customer considered its upgraded version as superior to other products.”

The TRS-3D enables automatic identification of vessels and aircraft by providing the ability to correlate plots and tracks of targets with the MSSR 2000 I identification system.

This will allow vessels to avoid friendly fire and to get a comprehensive situation picture.

The system is capable of supporting automatically locating and tracking of all types of air and sea targets and safe guidance of onboard helicopters.

The TRS-3D’s signal processing technologies also make it suitable for the early detection of low flying or slow moving objects in extreme environmental conditions.
