German procurement authority BAAINBw has awarded a contract to Hensoldt to supply its naval radar systems to equip the second batch of the German Navy’s K130 corvettes.

Under the contract, Hensoldt is required to deliver its TRS-4D Rotator naval radar and MSSR 2000 ID friend-or-foe identification system.

The order includes seven naval radar systems of each type, to be delivered by 2022.

Hensoldt CEO Thomas Müller said: “With the TRS-4D, the corvettes will be given an extremely powerful radar system which has already proven its capabilities, especially in the difficult environment of coastal waters.”

The German Navy is already using the TRS-4D on board its new F125 frigate in a configuration comprising four fixed planar arrays.

Previously, Hensoldt also delivered TRS-3D radar for integration on the first K130 batch.

“With the TRS-4D, the corvettes will be given an extremely powerful radar system which has already proven its capabilities, especially in the difficult environment of coastal waters.”

The company will now provide the TRS-4D in a version comprising a mechanically rotating antenna (TRS-4D Rotator) for the second batch of five ships.

Apart from the radar system, Hensoldt offers a ground-based air defense radar, TRML-4D.

The TRS-4D can be used for anti-aircraft and anti-surface operations. The ability of the radar’s rotating antenna to combine mechanical and electronic azimuth scanning enable quick detection and tracking of targets, the company noted.

Moreover, the increased sensitivity of the radar system’s AESA technology supports the detection of small and maneuvering targets with precision and to confirm the targets more quickly. This gives the ship crew more time to respond to threats.

According to Hensoldt, the radar can be specifically programmed to meet customer’s requirements. The parameters can also be adapted to combat any new or modified threats.
