General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co (GD NASSCO) has won a $10m contract for work on the US Navy’s Wasp-class amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6).

The award is a cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to a previously awarded contract.

The contract is for the ship’s emergency firefighting support, dewatering, safety, and initial clean-up efforts.

Work under the award is expected to conclude by November.

Awarded by the US Defense Department, the contract follows an explosion and fire that broke out onboard USS Bonhomme Richard earlier this month.

A total of 63 personnel, including 40 US Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, were treated for minor injuries, including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation in the incident.

The ship was docked pier-side at Naval Base San Diego in California when the fire escalated overnight.

A safety investigation, led by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is underway.

During his visit to San Diego to see the ship’s firefighting efforts firsthand, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) admiral Mike Gilday said: “Today, I witnessed the incredible work of those who combatted the fire aboard USS Bonhomme Richard for the past several days.

“We appreciate the quick and immediate response of sailors from across the San Diego waterfront, helicopter crews from HSC-3, our Coast Guard partners, local and federal firefighters, industry experts, and the local San Diego community. It truly has been an all hands effort and we are grateful.”

“Every sailor is a firefighter from day one, and the importance of damage control efforts can never be underestimated.

“Make no mistake, we will fully investigate what happened here so that we learn all that we can from this terrible tragedy.”
