The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India has reportedly aborted the trial of the Nirbhay cruise missile.

DRDO launched the 800km range missile from the test facility in the Indian state of Odisha and aborted the trial after a few minutes.

Hindustan Times quoted a government official as saying: “The missile was fired at 10:30am from the testing facility.

“But the missile developed a snag, and the trial was aborted eight minutes later.”

Nirbhay is said to be the tenth missile to be fired by the organisation in the last 35 days. India has fast tracked the development and deployment of the weapons in the wake of the border dispute with China.

China has mobilised the troops and support elements near Ladakh.

People familiar with the matter said that the organisation plans to carry out another trial, which will lead to the induction of the missile into the Indian military.

Nirbhay is a subsonic missile that can fly at speeds of 0.7 Mach and has sea-skimming and terrain-hugging capability.

The loitering capability of the missile permits the delivery platform to manoeuvre mid-flight and at the end to hit the target.

The launch of Nirbhay was powered by a solid rocket booster which was developed by the Advanced Systems Laboratory of DRDO.

Earlier this month, Indian Ministry of Defence announced that the DRDO successfully flight tested the anti-submarine warfare system Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART).

In January this year, DRDO test-fired a 3,500km range K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).
